As a student of law, attorney Dan Thayer interned as a law clerk
in the Department of Legislative Affairs for the United States Department of
Justice in Washington, D.C. in the summer of 1988. The experience was vital in
enabling him to learn about various legislative initiatives happening on
Capitol Hill.
While internships are not mandatory, many students find that
participating in such programs brings a host of benefits. Legal internships, in particular, are great helping
law students figure out if they made the right decision for their degree
education, and also ascertain which niche to specialize
in after graduating.
Judicial clerkship experiences tend to be popular among law
students since they allow students to experience the court's system at a state and federal level. This means getting a glimpse into the daily
occurrences during court settings and trials. While tasks may vary, the general
responsibilities include analyzing case
law, research, helping draft important legal documents and briefing the judge.
